China’s first baby born by caesarean section at an altitude of 5,000 meters was born in Langfang, North China’s Hebei province on Aug 23.
Doctors from a medical team of the China Petroleum Center Hospital successfully completed the surgery on the pregnant woman.
The surgery was carried out at Shuanghu People’s Hospital in Shuanghua, which holds the world record for a county located at the highest elevation.
The operation was successful and both the mother and baby are healthy.
Shuanghu county is located to the north of Tibet autonomous region, with an average altitude of about 5,000 meters. It has a low population density and an inhospitable natural environment.
Shuanghu has been designated a test area to challenge the physical limits of human beings.
Since July 2012, China Petroleum has been running a partnership program to support Shuanghu county in reducing poverty.
