Chinese president visits early disaster site

President Xi Jinping visited the city of Tangshan, Hebei province, on July 28, to get a better understanding of disaster relief work, in view of the fact that the city was hit by a massive earthquake four decades ago, and its role in China which has seen many natural disasters over the years.

Xi said that he considers increasing public awareness of natural disasters very import, and emphasized the fact that we need to live in harmony with nature.

He then went to Tangshan Earthquake Memorial Park to express his sympathy for the victims of the earthquake which had a magnitude of 7.8 and claimed more than 240,000 lives. He placed flower wreaths and bowed three times to pay his respect to both the victims and the rescuers who lost their lives in the effort.

Afterwards, he visited a clinic for people who were paralyzed or left paraplegic by the quake and pointed to how medical staff needs to provide thoughtful and meticulous care for the disabled.

In a symposium in the afternoon, Xi said that this is the key time to be thinking about floods and establishing an effective alarm system as soon as possible.
